Chhattisgarh faces political upheaval as Deputy Chief Minister Arun Sao confirmed the Enforcement Directorate's serious allegations against Chaitanya Baghel, son of former Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel. The younger Baghel was arrested on July 18, linked to a multi-crore liquor scam involving substantial financial discrepancies and a notable real estate investment.
Sao detailed the accusations, stating that Chaitanya Baghel invested Rs 16.70 crore in a real estate venture, contributing to financial irregularities totaling Rs 1,000 crore. He criticized attempts to divert attention towards other figures, emphasizing the gravity of the ED's claims. Sao disparaged the Congress-led economic blockade protesting the arrest as a complete failure.
Protests against the ED were conducted by Congress across Chhattisgarh, yet Sao noted widespread public and organizational opposition to the blockade. The arrest follows an ED probe into illicit liquor trade profits, with prior seizures from the Baghel residence revealing cash and presumed crime proceeds. The special court has remanded Chaitanya Baghel to custody until August 4.
