White Storks Make a Triumphant Return to Denmark’s Skies

The white stork, once extinct in Denmark, is experiencing a resurgence with 33 nestlings born in 2025. Thanks to conservation efforts and changing migration patterns, the species is regaining its foothold. However, agricultural practices pose ongoing challenges. The white stork, a symbol of good fortune in Danish folklore, is gradually reclaiming its presence in Denmark after facing extinction. This year has seen the birth of 33 nestlings, marking the highest number since the 1980s, according to Storks Denmark, a volunteer organization dedicated to conserving the species.

In the late 19th century, Denmark supported around 4,000 nesting pairs, but the shift in agricultural practices and loss of wetlands led to their decline and eventual local extinction by 2008. Today, warmer European winters and conservation initiatives are aiding the stork's return, although finding adequate food remains a challenge.

Efforts continue to support the species, as the Natural History Museum of Denmark tags nestlings to track migration. Volunteers, like Storks Denmark, provide both financial and practical assistance, feeding the young storks to bolster survival and maintain this culturally significant species.
