Reviving the Battle Tank: Franco-German MGCS Project Gains Momentum
The Franco-German MGCS main battle tank project is accelerating, backed by strong political support from both Germany and France. Previously stalled due to disagreements, efforts are now underway to finalize a production concept and begin prototype development, amid heightened European defense priorities following the Ukraine conflict.
The stalled Franco-German MGCS main battle tank project is gaining momentum, according to Rheinmetall CEO Armin Papperger. Both German and French political leaders are eager to push the project forward, he stated during a press event at a factory in northern Germany attended by French and German defense ministers.
Originally agreed upon in 2017, the project aims to replace the German Leopard 2 and French Leclerc tanks. However, it has faced numerous delays due to disagreements. The renewed urgency comes as Europe increases its defense production, feeling the pressure from Russia's 2022 invasion of Ukraine and uncertainties about U.S. involvement in NATO.
A production concept will be formulated soon in partnership with French company Thales and KNDS. Papperger expressed optimism that following the prototype stage, the project will swiftly move into full production.
