The mother of a deputy commissioner in Madhya Pradesh's Tribal Welfare Department has been arrested following the discovery of an alleged tiger skin at her Jabalpur residence, according to a forest official. Savitri Devi, the mother of Deputy Commissioner Jagdish Sarvate, appeared in court on July 23 and has since been incarcerated.
Jabalpur Range Ranger Apoorv Sharma, speaking to ANI, revealed that an EOW raid on July 22 at Sarvate's ancestral home yielded the discovery of a suspected tiger skin. The preliminary investigation was conducted on-site by senior scientist Dr. Aniruddha Majumdar, who confirmed its authenticity before it was handed over to forest authorities.
Devi, unable to present legal documentation for the skin, was subsequently arrested under charges of illegal possession. The skin has been transferred to Jabalpur Veterinary College for forensic analysis. Authorities are now investigating potential culpability of her son, Jagdish Sarvate, and legal proceedings are underway under the Wildlife Protection Act 1972.
