Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman called on income tax officers to elevate their benchmarks for prompt policy execution and reinforce taxpayer confidence.
During the 166th Income Tax Day event, she emphasized the necessity of swiftly issuing Order Giving Effects (OGEs) and demanded accountability from the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT), citing that delays are unacceptable. She reminded attendees that the new income tax bill was drafted within a mere three months.
Sitharaman commended officers for embracing new technologies and simplifying the 1961 Income Tax Act but criticized the persistent delays in OGE issuance. She outlined five focus areas for the department, including addressing unresolved tax demands and refining service delivery through technological advancements, to uphold the social contract between the state and taxpayers.
