Mamata Banerjee Champions Bengali Language Amid Cultural Controversy

In the midst of a heated debate over the Bengali language, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee of West Bengal has called for a renewed Bhasha Andolan, or language movement, asserting that Bengali speakers face harassment in multiple regions. At the 'Maha Nayak Samman' Awards, Banerjee declared the necessity for this movement, emphasizing Bengali as the world's fifth most spoken language.
Banerjee appealed for broad public involvement and the organization of awareness programs across various levels. She articulated her refusal to accept the persecution of Bengali speakers, underscoring that the matter concerns everyone in Bengal. The Chief Minister affirmed the importance of defending Bengal's cultural heritage.
Furthermore, Banerjee criticized the lack of Bengali representation in West Bengal's film industry, Tollywood, lamenting the dominance of non-Bengali content. Stating her respect for all languages, she stressed maintaining pride in Bengali to enrich and spread Bengal's culture. The language issue gained spotlight after discussions during 'Shahid Dibas' (Martyrs' Day) celebrations.
On a cultural note, Banerjee paid homage to the late cinema icon Uttam Kumar, reflecting on his lasting impact on Bengali culture and her personal regret at never meeting him.
