The Unified Pension Scheme (UPS) is gaining momentum among central government employees, with 31,555 participants as of July 2025. The deadline for enrollment is set for September, as informed by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman in the Lok Sabha on Monday.
Sitharaman stated that up to July 20, 2025, the government received 7,253 claims under UPS, of which 4,978 were processed for benefits payments. Since April 2025, employees have the option to participate in UPS through the National Pension System (NPS), ensuring assured payouts.
Minister of State for Finance Pankaj Chaudhary confirmed the enrollment figures, and the deadline was extended to September 30, 2025, based on employee requests. The scheme also includes retirement and death gratuities, alongside tax perks. However, there are no plans to expand such benefits to other sectors.
