The Supreme Court has once again urged the Election Commission of India to accept Aadhaar and electoral photo identity cards as valid identification documents for the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Bihar.
A division bench, comprising Justice Surya Kant and Justice Joymalya Bagchi, refused to stop the publication of the draft electoral rolls scheduled for August 1, stressing that the court could nullify the process later if it found any illegality.
Senior advocate Gopal Sankaranarayanan highlighted potential issues as the draft list could inconvenience around 4.5 crore voters, demanding action for those overlooked. The petitions challenging the ECI's process argue that standards imposed by the June 24 directive may unjustly burden citizens with proof requirements.
