Fresh enrollment figures for Kendriya Vidyalayas (KVs) in India have plummeted to their lowest in five years, with only 1,39,660 new admissions reported for the 2024-25 academic year. The Ministry of Education shared these figures with the Lok Sabha, highlighting a decline in overall student numbers to 13,50,518, compared to previous years.

Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan's written reply outlined a consistent decrease in new student enrollments over recent years, with numbers previously standing at 1,75,386 in 2023-24 and an even higher 1,95,081 in 2020-21. Despite this downturn, the government has sanctioned the opening of 85 new KVs under the Civil/Defence sector across India to accommodate the educational needs of Central Government employees' children.

To support this expansion, a significant budget increase has been allocated, rising steadily over the past years. For 2024-25, an amount of Rs 8,727 crore has been earmarked for KVs, with funds specifically designated for infrastructure upgrades under the PM SHRI Scheme, ensuring modernization through ICT labs and smart classrooms.
