Hundreds of apple growers staged a protest on Tuesday outside the Himachal Pradesh state secretariat, opposing the eviction of encroachments and cutting of apple trees on forest and government lands.
The demonstrators, under the banners of Himachal Kisan Sabha and Seb Utpadak Sangh, crossed barriers causing significant traffic disruptions. They vowed to persist in demanding regularisation of minor land encroachments.
In response, the Supreme Court has stayed a prior high court order for the removal of fruit-bearing orchards. State officials, including Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh, pledged to sympathetically consider the protesters' demands and address concerns with the Union government.
