In a significant stride towards renewable energy, India is set to install rooftop solar plants in one crore households under the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana by 2026-27. Union Minister of New and Renewable Energy Pralhad Joshi announced this initiative to the Lok Sabha, highlighting the government's commitment to sustainable energy.
The initiative, launched in February 2024, is part of a broader effort to promote renewable energy across all Indian states and union territories. Joshi also emphasized the implementation of the Pradhan Mantri-Kisan Urja Suraksha evam Utthaan Mahabhiyan (PM-KUSUM) scheme, which is tailored to boost renewable capacities based on state demands.
According to studies by the Council on Energy, Environment, and Water (CEEW) and TERI, the renewable energy sector is poised to create around 13 lakh jobs by 2025. Already, thousands have secured employment through the Ministry's Skill Development Programmes. In Madhya Pradesh alone, over 11,279 MW of renewable energy capacity has been installed, with further plans for substantial solar park development.
