In a sharp rebuke, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MP Sanjay Singh censured US President Donald Trump on Wednesday for imposing a 25 percent tariff, labeling it as a daily affront to India. Singh, addressing the media in New Delhi, emphasized, '...He consistently insults India. Besides threatening tariffs, Trump has cautioned Apple against producing iPhones in India and professes his affinity for Pakistan, which India should contemplate. Prime Minister Narendra Modi must ardently oppose this and clarify his next step.'
The call for action came after Trump announced that India would face a 25 percent tariff along with additional penalties, commencing August 1, as a response to its trade deficit. He further indicated that India's oil and military dealings with Russia, amid the Ukraine conflict, would attract supplementary penalties.
The Congress party joined the fray, vehemently criticizing Prime Minister Modi's foreign policy, branding it a 'failure.' In a sharp statement on X, Congress noted, 'Trump's 25% tariff on India, accompanied by penalties, signifies the cost of Modi's so-called friendship.' Their critique underscores growing domestic disapproval of Modi's international strategies.
