The recent decision by US President Trump to levy a 25 percent tariff on India has ignited political tensions between Washington and New Delhi. Congress leader Pawan Khera criticized Prime Minister Narendra Modi, raising questions about the effectiveness of Modi's foreign, security, and trade policies amid the escalating trade conflict.
In a statement to ANI, Khera expressed his disappointment, especially as expectations were high for Modi to confront Trump for allegedly misleading statements regarding a ceasefire. Khera highlighted past diplomatic successes under former PM Manmohan Singh, contrasting them with current challenges, and lamented a lack of response from Modi on crucial issues like the ceasefire and trade policies during his recent address.
President Trump defended the tariff move on his Truth Social platform, highlighting India's high tariff barriers as justification, and indicated an additional penalty for India's perceived economic alignment with Russia. Amidst this international pressure, Congress's Jairam Ramesh termed Trump's tactic as 'blackmail', urging PM Modi to take a firmer stance, and warned of the tariffs' potential repercussions on India's various industries.
