Deforestation in Colombia has significantly increased, with 113,608 hectares lost last year, largely affecting the Amazon. This marks a 43% rise compared to the previous year, contrasting with a 36% reduction in deforestation in 2023.
Environment Minister Lena Estrada highlighted that this alarming increase is driven by climate change-fueled forest fires, land-grabbing, livestock expansion, and illegal crop cultivation.
The Amazon suffered most, contributing to over 65% of deforestation. Despite being home to immense biodiversity, Colombia faces ongoing challenges with forest preservation.
