Monsoon Dampens Power Surge: A Cooler July Slows Consumption

Despite expectations of soaring electricity demands, power consumption in India grew minimally by 2.6% in July 2025. Heavy monsoons led to lesser use of cooling appliances, dampening demand and consumption. The highest peak power demand in July decreased to 220.59 GW from last year's 226.63 GW.

Power consumption in India experienced a modest increase of 2.6% in July 2025, reaching 153.63 billion units, compared to the same month last year. The surge was tempered mainly due to heavy rainfall across the country, which reduced the need for cooling appliances, according to official data.

Experts attribute the decline in power consumption to the intense monsoons that swept through various regions in India. This weather phenomenon effectively minimized electricity usage, leading to a decrease in peak power demand, which dropped to about 220.59 GW from 226.63 GW in July 2024.

The Indian Meteorological Department reported that the monsoon hit the Kerala coast earlier than expected, on May 24, 2025. The persistent rains mitigated the anticipated demand for electricity as temperatures were lower than forecasted, impacting the operation of cooling devices that typically drive consumption during the hotter months.
