West Bengal reported a remarkable 12% growth in gross Goods and Services Tax (GST) collections for July, according to provisional figures released by the Centre. The state collected Rs 5,895 crore, compared to Rs 5,257 crore in the same month last year, marking an upward trend in consumption and business activity.

Despite this growth, the cumulative GST revenues for the fiscal year reflect a mixed scenario. For the April–July period, West Bengal's post-settlement SGST was Rs 15,153 crore, showing a slight decline of 1% from the previous year. However, SGST collections on a pre-settlement basis rose by 5% in the first four months of FY26.

Among the eastern states, Bihar led with a 16% jump in gross GST collections in July, while Jharkhand and Odisha had varied performances. The across-states performance highlights evolving IGST apportionment patterns and potential variations in input tax credit claims, according to a finance ministry official. Nationally, GST collections grew 7% year-on-year to Rs 1,43,023 crore for July.
