A heavy security presence was observed at Taragarh in Rajasthan's Ajmer on Saturday as authorities prepared to initiate a demolition drive against illegal structures within the forest department's jurisdiction. Officials confirmed that several shops constructed on forest land would be targeted during this operation.
'The forest department is conducting this demolition drive to remove encroachments. Approximately 200 cabin-sized shops in Taragarh were built on forest department land. Heavy security has been deployed,' Ajmer SP Vandita Rana told ANI. Parallel efforts in Assam have focused on clearing forest lands of illegal occupants.
On Friday, Assam Minister Jayanta Malla Baruah vowed appropriate measures against non-indigenous residents and immigrants occupying forest lands in Guwahati. Baruah alleged that the presence of these groups threatens Assamese culture and the region's demographic makeup. He emphasized the necessity of action to preserve the indigenous population of Assam.
In response to Assam's ongoing eviction operations, Nagaland has heightened security along its borders to manage potential population movements. Nagaland DGP Rupin Sharma, IPS, acknowledged the border situation, urging public cooperation with law enforcement as the state's strategy unfolds. Sharma clarified that those termed 'illegal immigrants' are illegal settlers in Assam's reserve forests.
