An under-construction footbridge costing Rs 1.58 crore has collapsed amid heavy rainfall, stirring controversy in Jammu and Kashmir's Udhampur district. The footbridge, which aimed to connect the Sewna and Narsoo blocks, came down before its scheduled opening, highlighting potential technical issues.
Local leader Subhash Chander, District Development Council of Narsoo, expressed concerns over the collapse and demanded an inquiry. He stressed the need for accountability, requesting that officials responsible for any technical faults be penalized. Prompt reconstruction is also being urged, given the bridge's significance for local connectivity.
Following the collapse, Rajinder Singh, Additional District Development Commissioner Udhampur, confirmed that a committee has been set up to investigate. Initial assessments point to lapses in binding and supervisory practices. The investigation is ongoing, and a detailed report will be submitted to the District Collector for further actions.
