On Saturday, Himachal Pradesh Governor Shiv Pratap Shukla flagged off three vehicles loaded with essential relief materials from Raj Bhavan to Mandi and Kullu, districts ravaged by recent floods. Organized by the State Red Cross Society, the supplies include tents, blankets, tarpaulins, sanitary items, food, and daily-use goods designed to aid more than 1,200 families in distress.
Addressing reporters, Governor Shukla stressed the urgent necessity for behavioral and lifestyle transformation in response to recurring natural calamities in the area. 'The extent of damage will persist unless people alter their lifestyle. Without change, the losses will intensify,' he stated, following his recent meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi.
The Governor also pointed out that this was not the first relief consignment from Raj Bhavan, as three trucks had previously been dispatched through the Red Cross. 'Today, we are sending three more—one to Kullu and two to Mandi,' revealed Shukla. He also planned visits to Mandi and the Seraj region, including Thunag, expressing a commitment to engage with affected communities directly.
The ongoing monsoon has severely disrupted essential services in Himachal Pradesh, leaving major roads, electrical transformers, and water supply schemes damaged. According to the State's Emergency Operation Centre's August 2 estimates, 173 people have died, with rainfall-induced tragedies accounting for most fatalities. The State Disaster Management Authority has highlighted landslides, flash floods, and house collapses as prominent causes.
Governor Shukla echoed recent Supreme Court concerns about environmental degradation threatening the state's existence, encouraging a reevaluation of mountainous lifestyle practices. Emphasizing government support, he clarified that central aid is consistently provided following detailed assessments. Furthermore, Shukla responded to Chief Minister Sukhu's recent remarks, defending the need for rehabilitation centers in combating drug issues, while negating any criticism of governmental efficacy.
