Two Kerala-based nuns, previously arrested in Chhattisgarh on charges of human trafficking, were granted bail on Saturday by a local court. The Catholic Bishops Conference of India (CBCI) President and Thrissur Archbishop Mar Andrews Thazhath welcomed the decision, stating that the arrests were based on "false accusations."
The Archbishop praised government efforts to secure the nuns' release, calling for legislative measures to protect people from similar incidents. He emphasized the need for the case to be quashed quickly to prevent further false allegations. He thanked individuals and governments for their support in the matter.
The nuns, identified as being detained since July 25, were charged under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Orissa Freedom of Religion Act. Their advocate confirmed bail was granted under conditions including not leaving India. Meanwhile, political leaders, including Kerala BJP President Rajeev Chandrasekhar, facilitated their release from jail.
