In a tragic turn of events, rescue teams have located a body within a collapsed section of the El Teniente copper mine in Chile, following a moderate earthquake two days prior, the mine's director confirmed on Saturday.
Rescue operations have been underway to reach five miners trapped since Thursday evening, when a 4.2 magnitude earthquake caused sections of the mine to cave in. As Chile's largest copper mine, El Teniente has drawn significant concern and resources toward the rescue efforts.
A spokesman for the rescue team revealed that the body found is one of the five trapped miners, although identification efforts are ongoing. Meanwhile, the body of another miner, Paulo Marin Tapia, who was not among the trapped five, was discovered on Friday. Chile's National Copper Corp., Codelco, reported nine additional injuries, attributing the collapse to a seismic event.
