In response to a steep decline in onion prices, the Maharashtra State Onion Growers Association has appealed to Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis to intervene promptly. They have requested an urgent meeting at the Lasalgaon Agricultural Produce Market Committee (APMC), Asia's largest onion market, to explore immediate and sustainable solutions.
A delegation from the association has formally submitted a written request to the Lasalgaon APMC chairman and secretary, urging them to invite the chief minister to discuss the crisis. The association also reiterated this demand in an official email to Fadnavis.
Bharat Dighole, founder-president of the association, and Nashik district president Jaydeep Bhadane, through a signed letter, emphasized the dire financial conditions faced by farmers. Current onion prices range from Rs 800 to Rs 1,200 per quintal, significantly lower than the production cost of at least Rs 2,500 per quintal, causing daily losses.
