Jharkhand has announced a three-day state mourning period in honor of the late Shibu Soren, a stalwart of Indian politics and champion for tribal rights. The former Chief Minister and co-founder of the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha passed away at the age of 81 after a prolonged battle with illness.
During the mourning, national flags will fly at half-mast, state government offices will remain closed, and no official state functions will take place. The decision reflects Soren's significant role in leading the movement that ultimately resulted in the creation of Jharkhand state. His death marks the end of an era for the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha, which he helmed for 38 years.
Soren's political journey was characterized by his relentless advocacy for tribal communities. Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Congress Chief Mallikarjun Kharge both paid tribute to Soren's dedication. Praised as 'Dishom Guru,' he served as Jharkhand's Chief Minister three times and had a prominent presence in both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha over his four-decade political career.
