In a groundbreaking move, Punjab has become the first state in India to empanel sign language interpreters, translators, and special educators under the Juvenile Justice Act, 2015. This initiative aims to ensure accessible and sensitive justice for all, particularly benefiting children with hearing and speech impairments. The announcement came from Dr. Baljit Kaur, Minister for Social Security, Women, and Child Development, detailing how these professionals will be deployed district-wise to provide support.

Championed by Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, this landmark step is designed to empower children with special needs by removing communication barriers in legal, educational, and daily life settings. The move is also in alignment with the provisions of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, 2012. Dr. Kaur noted that the empanelled professionals will offer their support during court proceedings and official matters, enabling fair, impartial, and sensitive outcomes.

The initiative underscores the state government's commitment to fostering an inclusive society where every child feels heard, understood, and protected. Professionals will be deployed throughout districts, compensated as per legal provisions, to ensure timely assistance in routine and urgent cases involving children with special needs.

Minister Kaur highlighted Punjab's pioneering efforts in inclusive governance, noting the state has already broadcasted Punjab Vidhan Sabha proceedings in sign language. This latest initiative further strengthens the government's mission to eliminate systemic barriers, ensuring equal participation for all. It's a significant milestone in Punjab's ongoing mission to uphold the rights and dignity of children with disabilities while promoting accessible and compassionate justice.
