Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra has expressed her astonishment over an incident where fellow Congress MP R Sudha's gold chain was snatched in Delhi's supposedly secure Chanakyapuri area during her morning walk. The area is known for hosting several embassies and VIP residences, raising concerns about security in the capital.
Priyanka Gandhi noted the usual safety of the embassy district in Chanakyapuri, remarking on the apparent breakdown in police responsiveness when Sudha approached a nearby police vehicle for help. Highlighting the issue of women's security in cities like Delhi, Gandhi emphasized the need for more attentive policing.
In a statement to ANI, a distressed Sudha recounted the incident, criticizing the Delhi government, noting that it occurred under the watch of a female Chief Minister. Expressing her fears for the common woman, Sudha detailed her harrowing experience of having her chain violently snatched, clothes torn, and the lack of bystander intervention.
Despite reporting the incident to nearby police, Sudha reported an inadequate initial response, having to rely on congressional colleagues to escalate the matter. Priyanka Gandhi facilitated a route to escalate the issue to the parliamentary Speaker and the Home Minister. The Delhi police have since registered a case and started an investigation.
