Trade Tensions Escalate: Trump Targets India Over Russian Oil Ties
Donald Trump plans to raise tariffs on Indian goods due to its Russian oil purchases, viewing it as unjustified. Despite U.S. pressure, India maintains its stance citing economic necessity. The disagreement underscores geopolitical strains, with India defending its national interests amidst accusations from the West.

Amid growing geopolitical tensions, former U.S. President Donald Trump declared on Monday his intention to impose higher tariffs on Indian goods, citing the nation's extensive purchases of Russian oil as the primary reason. The move has been condemned by New Delhi as 'unjustified' and as targeting India's economic interests.
Last Friday, Washington announced the imposition of a 25% tariff on imports from India. Despite pressure from Western nations, including the U.S., to sever ties with Moscow following Russia's invasion of Ukraine, India has prioritized its longstanding relationship with Russia and economic requirements.
Trump criticized India for profiting from Russian oil while ignoring the Ukraine crisis. However, Indian sources reaffirmed their commitment to maintain oil imports from Russia, stressing these are essential to ensure affordable energy costs for its population. India's foreign ministry plans to safeguard its national economic security amid these disputes.
