The city of Ranchi bid a tearful farewell to Shibu Soren, the former Chief Minister of Jharkhand and a towering leader in the state's history. On Tuesday, his mortal remains were brought from his residence, accompanied by his son, current Chief Minister Hemant Soren, to the State Assembly for the public to pay their respects.

Soren passed away on August 4, 2025, at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital in New Delhi following a prolonged illness. His last rites are set to be conducted at his native village, Nimra. Political figures from across the spectrum offered condolences, celebrating his significant contributions to tribal rights and Jharkhand's identity.

Renowned for founding the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha in 1972, Soren's legacy includes a career punctuated by his fight against injustice and advocacy for tribal rights. Even amidst legal challenges, he remained an influential figure, lauded for his role in the creation of Jharkhand as a separate state in 2000.
