In a bid to uplift women and boost the local economy, the Assam government targets transforming 30 lakh women into Lakhpati Didis by 2028-29 through participation in Self Help Groups (SHGs). This initiative forms part of a larger strategy to empower underrepresented communities, a vision supported by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Under the leadership of Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma, the government has already converted 8 lakh women into Lakhpati Didis. Rural Development Minister Ranjeet Kumar Dass revealed that as of October, initiatives will be launched offering financial increments, potentially leading women to earn Rs 8000 monthly.
Additionally, the Orunodoi scheme, aimed at poverty alleviation, will launch its third phase on September 17, providing 40 lakh women with financial support. The scheme is aligned with the government's mission to elevate Assam among the top states in India, focusing on improving infrastructure and uplifting marginalized groups.
