On the 11th National Handloom Day, Assam's Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma paid tribute to the state's weavers and the heritage of handloom traditions like Muga, Eri, and Paat. Sarma emphasized the cultural significance and pride the handloom sector brings to Assam and its people.
In a post on social media platform X, Sarma stated, "Today, we honor the hands that weave not just fabric but culture, identity, and pride. Assam's handlooms carry the warmth of home and the strength of generations." He passionately articulated how handloom represents history and the spirit of Assam.
The Ministry of Textiles is celebrating the 11th National Handloom Day, with President Droupadi Murmu attending as the Chief Guest. The event features key officials including Textile Minister Giriraj Singh and other dignitaries. Approximately 650 weavers are participating, and prestigious awards such as the Sant Kabir Handloom Award will acknowledge exceptional weaving efforts.
A special exhibition will showcase award-winning weaves, and a coffee table book by NIFT Mumbai will be unveiled. A facilitation desk will provide information on government schemes supporting the handloom sector, which remains central to India's rural economy and women's empowerment. The sector employs over 35 lakh people, predominantly women.
The celebration marks the Swadeshi Movement's anniversary and the sector's robust role in sustainable development. Inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2015, National Handloom Day underscores the vital contribution of handloom weaving to India's socio-economic fabric. (ANI)
