Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan on Thursday paid homage to the esteemed scientist Professor MS Swaminathan at his birth centenary celebration. Describing Swaminathan as a 'selfless visionary' dedicated to the nation and its farmers, Chouhan spoke at the MS Swaminathan Centenary International Conference held at ICAR Pusa.
Chouhan recounted Swaminathan's significant impact on Indian agriculture, highlighting the scientist's response to the Bengal famine of 1942-43, which catalyzed his lifelong mission to combat hunger. Key among his achievements was the 1966 wheat import initiative, boosting wheat production from 5 million to 17 million tonnes, leveraging collaboration with Punjab farmers.
Recognizing Swaminathan's pivotal role in establishing Krishi Vigyan Kendras (KVKs), Chouhan acknowledged their ongoing contribution to equipping farmers with crucial scientific knowledge. The conference coincided with a commemorative coin and stamp issued by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, underscoring Swaminathan's dedication to advancing food security.
