On Sunday, U.S. President Donald Trump called for China to quadruple its soybean orders from the United States, suggesting this step could help narrow Beijing's trade deficit with Washington. Trump's statement, made via Truth Social, comes amid uncertainties surrounding a trade truce deadline.

The soybean market responded quickly, with the Chicago Board of Trade's most active soybean contract rising 2.13% following Trump's remarks. China, a major global soybean importer, primarily sources the commodity from Brazil and the U.S., although Trump's suggestion would require a substantial shift in purchasing behavior.

Despite the overture, analysts like Johnny Xiang of AgRadar Consulting express skepticism about China's willingness to massively increase U.S. soybean purchases. Historical challenges, including unmet Phase One trade deal commitments, cast doubt on any significant change in China's sourcing strategy, particularly given its recent pivot towards South American imports.
