In an unprecedented move this season, all 18 gates of the Hathinikund Barrage have been opened due to the rising water levels of the Yamuna River. This development follows continuous heavy rainfall, leading to an inflow of 1.78 lakh cusecs of water, according to Vijay Garg, Executive Engineer of the Irrigation Department.
Garg noted, 'This is the highest water level recorded this season.' The India Meteorological Department (IMD) had earlier issued a Nowcast at the Tehsil level for Haryana and Punjab, predicting thunderstorms, lightning, and varying rainfall intensities. Heavy rain with thunderstorms is expected in parts of Karnal and surrounding regions, while moderate rainfall is forecast for areas like Kaithal and Panchkula.
In Punjab, moderate showers with thunderstorms are anticipated in areas including Patiala and Mohali, while light rain is expected elsewhere. Though no severe warnings have been issued, residents are advised to stay alert to abrupt weather changes and take precautions, especially during thunderstorms with potential wind speeds of 30-40 kmph.
