In a decisive move, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has issued a three-line whip to its Rajya Sabha members, urging them to participate and vote in the upcoming election for the Committee on Welfare of Other Backward Classes (OBC). The election is scheduled for August 19 and seeks to elect representatives who will champion the cause of OBC upliftment across various sectors.
Scheduled between 11 AM and 2 PM on Tuesday at Samvidhan Sadhan, the voting session is pivotal for determining the future initiatives aimed at improving OBC representation in job sectors and government policies. The committee's mandate includes examining government measures and providing reports to Parliament under Article 338B of the Constitution. First formed in 2011, the committee is annually reconstituted and is currently led by Ganesh Singh.
The committee, with members across both Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha, recently convened to adopt draft reports on government actions regarding OBC welfare. Another meeting is slated for August 20 to further discuss OBC employment representation, particularly in Railway Zones and PSUs. In March, it addressed the representation of OBCs in the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF).
