In a swift response to incessant heavy rainfall, authorities in Himachal Pradesh's Kullu district have closed all educational institutions after a section of the road near the Bhoothnath bridge was compromised by the swelling Beas River. The directive was issued by the District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) amid heightened alerts for adverse weather conditions.
Amid reports of significant weather-related incidents like landslides, cloudbursts, and blocked roads from Sub-Divisional Officers in Kullu and Banjar, the closure order aims to safeguard students and staff. Collated under Sections 30 and 34(m) of the Disaster Management Act, 2005, the order reflects the gravity of the situation as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has projected continued rain.
Meanwhile, the region grapples with staggering losses: Himachal Pradesh has witnessed 268 fatalities since June 20, predominantly from landslides and flash floods. Damage extends across infrastructure, homes, and agriculture, tallying over Rs 2,194 crore. With thousands of homes and livestock affected, the state remains on high alert as mitigation efforts continue.
