Gujarat, historically recognized for its trade and enterprise, is on the verge of establishing a significant presence on the global sports stage. The heritage city of Ahmedabad is set to host several prestigious international sporting events, according to an official statement. In 2025, the city will welcome the Commonwealth Weightlifting Championship, the Asian Aquatics Championship, and the AFC Under-17 Asian Cup Qualifiers, attracting elite athletes worldwide.
The Commonwealth Weightlifting Championship 2025 will take place at Ahmedabad's Naranpura Sports Complex from August 24 to 30, with over 350 athletes from 29 countries expected to participate. This will be succeeded by the Asian Aquatics Championship in September and October, featuring swimmers from China, Japan, and Korea. Furthermore, India will host the AFC U17 Asian Cup Qualifiers in November 2025, with matches to be held at The Arena by TransStadia in Ahmedabad, spotlighting teams from India, Iran, Palestine, and others.
Looking ahead, Ahmedabad will also host the Asian Weightlifting Championship and the Archery Asia Para Cup in 2026. The state has also secured the 2029 World Police and Fire Games, set to take place across Ahmedabad, Gandhinagar, and Ekta Nagar. India's successful bid for the 2030 Commonwealth Games, with Ahmedabad as the host city, underscores the state's emerging reputation as a versatile sports destination. This development is attributed to visions of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the efforts of current Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, who have propelled Gujarat's athletes and facilities to international recognition. The Khel Mahakumbh initiative and Sports Policy 2022-27 are pivotal in cementing Gujarat's place in the sporting world.
