On Tuesday, the Indian Parliament advanced its efforts in mineral sustainability by passing a significant amendment bill aimed at promoting mineral conservation and zero waste mining practices, crucially aligning with the National Critical Mineral Mission's goals. This development comes as Union Minister G Kishan Reddy emphasized the government's transparent approach and the increased production facilitated through technology advancements.

The Mines and Minerals (Development and Regulation) Amendment Bill, 2025, successfully made its way through the Rajya Sabha amidst opposition's demands for a debate on Special Intensive Revision in Bihar. In his address, Minister Reddy cited the identification of 24 critical minerals essential for various industries, underscoring the Modi government's initiative in reducing dependency on imports and encouraging domestic production.

The measure also seeks to address global mineral demands through innovative strategies such as offshore mining and international cooperation. India has already begun auctioning offshore mineral blocks and signed agreements for exploration in countries like Argentina and Zambia. A particular focus is on developing a robust framework supporting dynamic market mechanisms and establishing mineral exchanges, aiming to stabilize market prices and encourage investment.
