During a press conference on Tuesday, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma issued a stern warning to "strange people" visiting Assam, threatening arrests for those engaging in excessive political activities. Sarma claimed such individuals had historically disrupted the National Register of Citizens (NRC) process in Assam.

The Chief Minister identified Mumbai High Court Advocate Neha Darbani and Irfan Ali Engineer among recent visitors, along with others from Kerala, accusing them of undermining efforts. He emphasized no fundamentalists from other regions would find shelter in Assam, asserting strict surveillance on outsiders.

Sarma's remarks followed criticism from West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, who accused the central government of instilling fear among Bengalis through NRC discussions. Banerjee's comments marked a pre-election strategy, according to Sarma, as she sought to rally support by questioning citizenship policies.
