In a significant breakthrough, Chandigarh's Cyber Crime Police Station announced the arrest of a 34-year-old Mumbai resident for allegedly defrauding a victim of Rs 1.3 crore by impersonating an employer. This operation was led by Superintendent of Police Cyber Crime Geetanjali Khandelwal, alongside DSP A Venkatesh and Inspector Eram Rizvi.
The accused, identified as Joshua Oscar Nevis, reportedly sent a WhatsApp message posing as the victim's boss, demanding an urgent transfer of funds purportedly for a new project. Convinced by the deception, the victim transferred Rs 1.3 crore to Nevis's ICICI Bank account, only to later discover the fraud.
Chandigarh Police swiftly acted, conducting raids in Mumbai and filing an FIR on April 20. Nevis was apprehended on August 13. During interrogation, he revealed his bank details had been exploited by others in the scam. The investigation continues as authorities work to identify additional suspects involved in similar cyber crimes.
