On Tuesday evening, a Mumbai Monorail malfunctioned due to overcrowding, surpassing its design capacity of 104 metric tonnes with an actual weight of 109 metric tonnes. This excess led to a mechanical failure, severing the connection between the power rail and the current collector, thereby disrupting power supply, as reported by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA).

Following the incident, MMRDA urged passengers to comply with security and technical guidelines to enhance safety during emergencies. Alongside Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), efforts are underway to assist affected passengers and restore normal operations. Meanwhile, Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde announced a comprehensive investigation, ensuring such incidents are prevented in the future.

Deputy Chief Minister Shinde called for caution, advising residents to remain indoors unless necessary due to the prevailing red alert warnings. He confirmed that rescue operations were efficiently conducted, with medical teams on standby. Contributory factors include the closure of the Harbour Line because of ongoing heavy rains, leading to overcrowding in the Monorail. MLA Captain Tamil Selvan stressed that passengers should heed monorail capacity limits to avoid future mishaps.
