A preliminary investigation into the Mumbai Monorail incident on Tuesday evening has identified overcrowding as the primary cause, according to a press release by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA). The monorail exceeded its design capacity, resulting in a power failure due to mechanical issues.

The MMRDA has urged commuters to adhere to instructions from security and technical teams to ensure smooth operations during emergencies. Efforts by the MMRDA and Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) have facilitated the rescue of stranded passengers and the swift restoration of services.

Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde has assured the public of a comprehensive investigation to prevent future occurrences. He has also advised citizens to remain indoors, given the red alert for adverse weather conditions.

With the Harbour Line closed, the monorail saw increased numbers, contributing to the overload and subsequent power breakdown. Despite initial delays, rescue operations concluded successfully, with all passengers brought to safety.

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLA Captain Tamil Selvan noted the incident as a narrowly averted disaster, emphasizing the need for public awareness regarding monorail capacity limits.
