India Progresses on Securing the Bangladesh Border in West Bengal

Union Minister Nityanand Rai reported to Rajya Sabha on the progress of fencing along the India-Bangladesh border in West Bengal. Of the 2216.7 km stretch, 1647.696 km is fenced. The government is working on expediting the acquisition process for the remaining land to enhance border security.

In a recent statement to the Rajya Sabha, Union Minister of State for Home Affairs, Nityanand Rai, announced that out of the 2216.7 km border shared with Bangladesh in West Bengal, a substantial 1647.696 km has been successfully fenced.

Minister Rai highlighted that, out of the remaining 569.004 km, 456.224 km is feasible for fencing, with land acquisition proceedings underway for significant portions. For 77.935 km of this feasible area, the necessary land has already been handed over to the executing agency.

The government is actively working with the State to speed up land acquisitions for the stretch that remains. Timely financial compensation is being ensured, with payments executed for 181.635 km. Issues of illegal infiltration persist, adding urgency to the border security efforts.
