Onion prices in India experienced a notable increase, jumping from Rs 800 to Rs 1,600 per quintal, following Bangladesh's decision to renew its import policy, as reported by a farmers' association.
Despite this price rise, the current figures still fall short of the production cost, which exceeds Rs 2,200 per quintal, as highlighted by Bharat Dighole, president of the Maharashtra State Onion Producers Association.
Dighole mentioned that Bangladesh's import approval from mid-August to mid-December could offer some respite to struggling farmers, who face financial losses due to surplus supplies and rising production expenses. The Lasalgaon onion market in Nashik sets the standard for onion prices across Asia.
