Contentious E1 Settlement Plan Puts Two-State Solution at Risk
The Israeli settlement plan, known as E1, has been approved, threatening Palestinian lands required for a prospective state. This move could isolate Israel internationally while further diminishing the prospects of a two-state solution, as stated by critical Palestinian and international voices. Infrastructure work could begin shortly.

In a controversial move, Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich has announced the final approval for the E1 settlement plan, which traverses territory necessary for a potential Palestinian state. The plan, set to bisect the West Bank and isolate it from East Jerusalem, received clearance from a defense ministry planning commission.
The announcement of the E1 settlement plan has sparked backlash globally, with Western allies indicating frustration as some contemplate recognizing Palestinian statehood at the UN General Assembly. The Palestinian foreign ministry and German government both condemned the move, stating it undermines the two-state solution.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has remained silent on the E1 approval. However, he reiterated his commitment to preventing the establishment of a Palestinian state during a recent visit to the West Bank. With the possibility of construction starting soon, the plan could further derail peace efforts.
