In a significant move to boost agricultural exports, India has for the first-time shipped Garhwali apples from Dehradun to Dubai. This inaugural 1.2-tonne trial shipment was flagged off by Commerce Secretary Sunil Barthwal, marking a new chapter in the country's export initiatives, as stated by the commerce ministry.

The shipment was facilitated by the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA). Lessons derived from this trial are expected to refine practices in cold chain management, post-harvest handling, and logistics frameworks, according to the authority.

Despite the unique appeal of these apples, growers face challenges in accessing lucrative international markets due to infrastructural and logistical constraints. Recognizing these hurdles, APEDA is actively working with local entities to create sustainable export pathways. The focus is on educating growers about Good Agricultural Practices (GAPs), meeting international quality standards, and enhancing post-harvest techniques. The agency is also facilitating organic certification to boost the produce's market competitiveness.
