The Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) has launched its first specialized training program targeting private security staff at ports, aiming to fortify India's Hybrid Port Security Model. This initiative, which kicked off simultaneously at Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority in Mumbai and Chennai Port Authority, intends to uplift the skills of private security personnel while standardizing security protocols across ports.
India, with approximately 200 small and intermediate ports, heavily relies on private security, especially in minor ports not covered by CISF. Recognizing the need for uniform security procedures, the training curriculum was crafted with input from various stakeholders, launching as a pilot project to professionalize the sector further.
The comprehensive 'Port Facility Security Course,' crafted in collaboration with the Directorate General of Shipping, offers essential port operation knowledge and practical skills such as threat identification and emergency response. Participants are trained on legal frameworks, use of advanced security devices, and international standards under the ISPS Code, combining both theoretical and practical approaches to security management.
Instructors from CISF, Customs, and other marine-related departments lead the program, blending classroom learning with hands-on exercises to ensure a robust understanding of port security. During its pilot phase, the course enrolled a total of 66 security personnel from multiple major ports across the country, laying the groundwork for nationwide implementation.
Port authorities have lauded the program. Chennai Port Authority's Chairperson, Sunil Paliwal, IAS, underscored its significance in port security management, while SR Saravanan, IPS, Inspector General, CISF (South Sector), highlighted the program's empowerment of security personnel through targeted, expert training.
This development occurs amidst escalated maritime security sensitivities, following earlier elevations of security levels at ports nationwide. The CISF's initiative symbolizes a strategic enhancement of India's capacity to protect maritime trade interests in the Indian Ocean region.
