In a decisive move, the Tamil Nadu government has ordered the State Environment Impact Assessment Authority (SEIAA) to rescind the clearance previously granted to the Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) for hydrocarbon exploration in Ramanathapuram district. This directive follows robust protests and strong opposition from fishermen and political factions.
The SEIAA had initially approved drilling in 20 wells; however, Finance Minister Thangam Thennarasu has firmly stated that the government will not permit such projects due to concerns about environmental impact and local opposition. The state has sustained this stance since enacting the Protected Agricultural Zone (PAZ) Act, aimed at safeguarding the Cauvery Delta Region.
The project threatens the coastal ecosystem and the livelihoods of thousands in fishing communities, prompting calls from various political parties and environmental groups for its cancellation. Opposition spans the political spectrum, with figures such as MDMK chief Vaiko and PMK leader Dr. Anbumani Ramadoss highlighting environmental and seismic risks.
