EU to Fast-Track Ban on Russian LNG Imports in New Sanctions Package
The European Commission intends to implement a ban on Russian LNG imports by January 1, 2027, as part of a 19th sanctions package against Moscow. The package will target Russian shadow tankers, cryptocurrency, and various banks. The earlier ban became a priority following a call between EU and US leaders.

The European Commission is poised to expedite the ban on Russian LNG imports, targeting January 1, 2027, rather than the previously planned 2028. This move is part of a broader 19th sanctions package aimed at tightening the economic screws on Moscow.
The proposed package, to be unveiled on Friday, will extend the reach of EU sanctions to Russia's shadow tanker fleet, the cryptocurrency sector, banking entities in Russia and Central Asia, Chinese refineries, and economic zones exploiting customs loopholes for dual-use military goods.
The accelerated timetable for the LNG import ban became critical after European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen held discussions with U.S. President Donald Trump. The U.S. leader has consistently pressed the EU to end its energy dependencies on Russia sooner.
