India's Poultry Surge May Spark US Soybean Meal Imports
India, despite being self-sufficient, might need to import soybean meal from the US due to rising poultry demand. India's burgeoning poultry industry could soon lead to imports of soybean meal from the United States, despite the nation's current self-sufficiency. Experts from the Compound Livestock Feed Manufacturers Association highlight ongoing trade negotiations between India and the US that might facilitate these imports.
Speaking at the Poultry India Expo's curtain raiser in Hyderabad, chairman Divya Kumar Gulati discussed the circumstances compelling US farmers to seek new markets after China cut its purchases. He noted that a recent delegation visit highlighted US farmers' financial difficulties, which could expedite trade agreements.
Gulati clarified that the focus is on promoting soybean meal rather than whole soybeans, noting India's existing import experience. He expressed concern that the rapid growth in poultry could outpace domestic production of protein sources, necessitating reliance on imported soybean meal, albeit within regulated frameworks.
