The Namchik-Namphuk coal block in Arunachal Pradesh commenced operations on Monday, signaling a historic move for the northeastern region, as confirmed by officials. This development marks the state's foray into commercial coal mining.
The ceremony saw Union Minister G Kishan Reddy and Chief Minister Pema Khandu performing the 'Bhoomi Poojan' ritual at Longtom in the Kharsang Sub-Division. With coal reserves estimated at 1.5 crore tonnes, the block's journey from its initial allocation in 2003 faced numerous setbacks until its revival in 2022 through an auction that welcomed private sector involvement.
This venture is poised to boost the state's annual revenue by over Rs 100 crore, according to officials. Praising the development, Reddy and Khandu highlighted the project's potential for supporting energy security, job creation, and economic transformation, aligning with the Prime Minister's EAST vision.
