In response to alarming foot-and-mouth disease alerts in 48 countries for 2025-26, Uzbekistan announced stringent measures to safeguard its livestock industry. Partial quarantine of cattle is to be implemented, the Ministry of Agriculture revealed on Wednesday.
Measures include farm disinfection, restricted outsider access, and culling of infected animals as part of the national 'cattle hygiene' month. This initiative follows foot-and-mouth outbreaks in northwest China and a Siberian mass culling due to pasteurellosis and rabies, incidents Siberian farmers have criticized as excessive.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture raised concerns over a possible unconfirmed outbreak, but Russian officials asserted no current disease risks. Meanwhile, Kazakhstan has ceased importing Russian animal feed wheat amid this crisis, a situation that has led to rare protests in Russia and demands for government resignations.
